They say time flies when you’re having fun. The last 3 years have certainly flown by, which is a sign of the fun the last 3 years have been.
It’s Sugar & Vice’s birthday today and that first day of November, back in 2014, when we launched a small range at I Love My Laundry feels like a lifetime ago, but we are so grateful for the opportunities, the lessons and the growth we’ve experienced in just over 1000 days.
Speaking of lessons, there have been so many – like waaay more than you can even imagine at the beginning of your entrepreneurial journey – but 3 really stand out for me.
1.) 3 Business lessons of the last 3 years:
The entrepreneurial journey can be very lonely (nevermind how daunting and scary it is) so it’s crucial to surround yourself with likeminded people. Other designers and small business owners are your friends, your community, and not your competitors. Cultivate relationships with them, build a network, draw on their support, but also give back. You’ll be awed at the creativity and collaboration opportunities that arise through these relationships and networks.
This is VERY difficult, but has become something of a mantra here at Sugar & Vice. Do what you do, and do it well. And keep doing it. Be aware of what others are doing and appreciate it for what it is, but stay focused on what your brand’s unique offering is. Really, don’t compare – it’s a waste of your energy and creativity.
Sometimes we’re so busy running a business, getting stuff done and just dealing with the madness that is the entrepreneurial journey that we ignore the small wins and minor achievements and don’t recognise and celebrate it. Big wins and major achievements are nothing more than a series of smaller ones that have gained momentum over time.
So celebrate the wins. Drink champagne with your person, note it in your journal, treat yourself to the largest slice of cake you can find (you can even put a candle of it and blow it out!), or take the afternoon off and bask in your own fabulousness! Whatever it is, acknowledge it, enjoy it, and then get back to work.
2.) 3 bestsellers of all time:
When I started S&V I didn’t think I would get to 3 years, but here I am and I’m grateful. Thank you to our customers for your support. It was so interesting to look back in the inventory records to see what you loved the most.
The Sugar Skull was one of the first designs in our very first range and has been popular since then. The design very much epitomises the ethos of the Sugar & Vice brand – it’s playful but edgy, abstract but appealing. We can understand why it is one of your favourites!
As interesting (and insightful!) as it was to see what your favourites products were, so it was to look at the best blogs. Here they are again, in case you missed of them.
3.) 3 best performing blog posts:
The Sugar & Vice blog has been such a fun way to share new designs, inspirations, thoughts, advice, aspirations, and other topics that matter to us. We’ve had a great response to our blogs over the years, which motivates us to keep doing them (because, fellow entrepreneurs will understand, blogging can often feel like a chore when it’s not your core business). Click on the images below to see the blog posts.
So that’s our 3 x 3 x 3. Thank you for 3 years of support, encouragement and friendship. Here’s to at least 3 more. There would be no Sugar & Vice without our customers, fans and friends. That calls for 3 thumbs up to you.
